Building an Inclusive Workplace: How Spark Speech Pathology created a Win-Win Opportunity

Glen Eira City Councils overarching ‘Community for All Abilities’ program aims to create an accessible and inclusive community where everyone can actively engage, participate, and contribute within Glen Eira. A key part of this vision is providing opportunities for people with disabilities to build skills, confidence and social connections through volunteering.

Spark Speech Pathology provides assessments and therapy to children, adolescents, and some adults, helping them to improve their communication skills.  One of their long-term clients, John, had been with the service since he was two years old.  After finishing school, he found himself with time on his hands and a strong desire to contribute to a workplace. He had a natural talent for organisation and a deep sense of purpose in helping others.

At the same time, Spark Speech Pathology team was facing a challenge - managing thousands of therapy resources.  Cupboards were disorganised, therapists needed materials laminated and printed, but the administration team simply didn’t have the capacity. This presented the perfect opportunity for John to step in and make a meaningful contribution.

With the support of his worker, John took on the role of Resource Administrator, proudly wearing his badge each shift. Over time, his work made an enormous difference—resources became organised, and therapists could finally find what they needed with ease. But beyond the practical benefits, John’s experience had a deeper impact. Through volunteering, he developed valuable employability and social engagement skills, laying a strong foundation for future work and becoming an active, valued member of the community

John “Working at Spark has helped me to be efficient, learn how to manage the resources and improve my social skills by talking to people. I have enjoyed working at Spark because people are nice, the work is great and it's a nearby place for me contribute to my community”.

John’s experience is a powerful example of how volunteering can help individuals gain skills, independence, and confidence. It also shows how inclusive workplaces benefit from diverse contributions.
John “I highly recommend voluntary work experience.  I feel safe and comfortable in this environment and everyone is inclusive”.
Bev (Spark Speech Pathology) “Would we recommend that other businesses do the same? Absolutely. When an opportunity is created thoughtfully, everyone wins. It’s about creating a workplace where everyone feels valued, included, and empowered.  It truly is an opportunity to change someone’s life for the better while reaping benefits for your business at the same time. And that’s a culture worth investing in”.

John’s journey highlights the importance of creating accessible opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in meaningful work. If your business has the capacity to offer a similar role, consider taking the first step. The impact could be life-changing – for everyone involved.

How We Ignite Connections

Picture
Igniting connections between our therapists and their clients and personalizing their therapy programs to keep them engaged and motivated. We provide both individual and group therapy at our rooms in Caulfield South, at local schools and early childhood centres. We also offer Telehealth sessions.

Igniting connections between our clients and their peers or colleagues. At Spark, we have a special interest in the area of social skills. We believe social skills are essential throughout our lifespan in order to make strong connections with others and maintain self-esteem. We work with children of all ages (including pre-school), adolescents and adults to assist with conversational skills, working and playing co-operatively, friendships and reading social situations.

Igniting connections in our clients’ brains to assist them to learn skills and enable them to move forward toward their goals. We are strong advocates of developing a growth mindset (i.e. having the courage to attempt tasks that may at first seem difficult or a little scary). This results in stronger neural connections.

Igniting connections with parents and assisting them to best support their child and appreciate their child’s successes. We respect the fact that parents know their child better than anyone else and we work together to share our expertise with theirs.

Igniting connections with other professionals who are involved with our clients (e.g. teachers, occupational therapists, psychologists, paediatricians). This ensures that the clients are viewed holistically and that skills learned can be transferred into other settings. We also believe in setting goals that are functional and meaningful across different contexts.
